Hi everybody. Thanks for checking out my about me section. Just a heads up this might be a little long so if you make it to the end of this a big congrats will be in order!
I first picked up my first camera at the age of 8 back in 1987. I had won it in a school contest for selling for a candy bar fundraiser and selling 3rd most in the WHOLE school. It was a Kodak Disc camera. Something that was all the rage back then. But as a 8 year old the only thing that I was concerned with was hanging with friends and playing Nintendo. Can anyone really blame me? However, it wasn't until the next year where i actually picked it up and used it. The parents got sick of me staying inside and playing games from the time i woke up til the time i got home. I wasn't much of a sports person. I wasn't old enough to go to concerts. I also didn't have many friends at the time. The fact that i my game time was limited, i needed something to occupy my time. Guess it was time to learn photography.
It was a rough go even though it only had one button. I didn't know anything about aperture, shutter speed, iso. It was all greek to me until MANY years later. The other hinderance this new hobby that I took up was more expensive than any video game would of costed. However for every disc of film bought, every disc developed i had to pay half of it. Being my allowance money was at stake, i had to learn to "get good" even if it was a point and shoot. The learning process went a good three years. Then it clicked. (no pun intended). I had taken the camera to a WWF (Now WWE) event in my city. I had some real great shots. It pushed me to go further with it. This was around 1994. Maybe 95. So by this time i already been shooting for 7 years and i was now in my early teens. I could have put the camera away and i attempted to because around this time I got (tried) involved with sports. Dating was also on my mind and ofcourse gaming was still a factor on my mind. How would i find time to do my photography with all this going on? I still had the disc camera. Time to put it back in the closet again?
Well sports didn't work out
Dating didn't work out
Video games i still was forced outside for the summer
and Friends...Well by this time i realized i was more of a loner anyways.
The Camera didn't get put away.
I beat that thing until they stopped making film for it and being i didn't really have any knowledge of what 35 mm was, I started other endeavors, like writing. That lasted until college when i realized that I wasn't going to be the next Stephen King or Clive Barker.
Now its 2001, Digital cameras were hitting the market. I've always attempted to be ahead of the game (no pun intended) and being i was working a decent paying job i skipped 35 mm entirely and went with a Sony Cybershot 3.1 mp (sounds ancient now that I think about it) But again just like the disc it disc, it didn't really progress my photo skills . I also went to a Panasonic Lumix a few years later. Also a point and shoot.
It wasn't until 2007 when i bought a Canon Rebel XS where I started actually LEARNING what I was capable of doing. I have done conceptual shoots, reunions, boudoir, senior photos, and street photography. My opinion has always been, if it looks good, shoot it! Not bad for someone who was self taught
What a voyage its been
